For the past few weeks, we’ve been journeying through the Prayer of St. Francis, one line at a time.
This week, we come to these words:
“Where there is doubt, let me sow faith.”
Yesterday, I attended a retirement function for someone who has played a significant part of my professional journey.
As she reflected on her career, she shared something that immediately found a place in my heart.
She said:
“Someone believed in me before I had fully learned to believe in myself.
That trust made all the difference.
The opportunities I remember most are not necessarily those that came with the biggest titles or the greatest responsibility. They are the moments when someone simply said, ‘Go ahead. I know you can do it.'”
I sat there quietly thinking…
Me too!
When I look back over my own journey, I can see people who saw something in me before I saw it in myself.
Teachers.
Leaders.
Friends.
Mentors.
People who entrusted me with opportunities that stretched me.
Not because I was completely ready…
But because they believed I could become ready.
Their faith became a bridge while mine was still growing…
This perspective made me realize that perhaps sowing faith isn’t only about encouraging someone to believe in God.
Sometimes it’s believing in the gifts God has placed within another person before they can fully see them themselves.
A word of encouragement.
An opportunity.
A conversation.
A simple, “I believe in you.”
Those moments can change the direction of a life.
In Hebrews 10:24:
“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.”
What a beautiful invitation.
Not to compete.
Not to compare.
But to call out the potential we see in one another.
It is amazing to consider that many of the opportunities I’ve been given over the years began with someone else’s faith in me… And now, I have the privilege of doing the same.
As a mother.
As a leader.
As a coach.
As a mentor.
As a friend.
Every time I encourage someone to take the next step…
Every time I remind someone of their strengths…
Every time I tell someone, “Go ahead. I know you can do it.”
I am sowing faith.
Who believed in you before you fully believed in yourself?
Have you ever thanked them?
And this week…
Who in your life needs someone to believe in them?
Perhaps your encouragement will become the bridge between their doubt and their courage.
Today, my prayer is simple:
Lord, where there is doubt, let me sow faith.
Help me to see in others what You see.
Give me words that encourage rather than discourage.
And may I become the kind of person who helps others believe that, with You, more is possible than they ever imagined.
Amen.
