A Lesson That Changed How I Live

Today is Day 2 of our 21-Day Gratitude Challenge:

Who is someone that has positively impacted your life, and what did they do?

For me, the answer is my mother.

Not just for what she did…
but for what her life has taught me—and continues to teach me.

My mother worked tirelessly for years, planning for the day when she could finally slow down and enjoy life on her own terms.

She sacrificed.
She postponed.
She prepared for “later.”

But life didn’t unfold the way she expected.

Shortly after she retired, she began facing health challenges. And even now, she continues to navigate those realities.

And it has been incredibly difficult to watch someone who has given so much…
not be able to fully enjoy the future she worked so hard for.

Interestingly, last Saturday, we celebrated her 72nd birthday.

And as I reflected on her life – her strength, her sacrifices, and her journey – I was reminded again of just how much she has shaped me.

While I still believe in planning, setting goals, and preparing for the future…

I also learned this:

We are not promised “later.”

Scripture Reminds Us

In Matthew 6:34:

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

This isn’t a call to ignore the future…but a reminder to live fully in the present.

Because of her, I have chosen to live differently.

I have learned to:

  • create meaningful experiences now
  • prioritize what truly matters
  • make time for joy, connection, and presence

Not someday.
Not when everything is perfect.

Now.

So today, I am grateful.

Grateful for my mother’s love.
Grateful for her sacrifices.
Grateful for the life she has lived…

And grateful for the lesson it continues to teach me.

A lesson that shapes how I show up, how I choose, and how I live – every single day.

Reflection

Who has impacted your life in a way that changed how you live?

What did their story teach you?

And how are you living differently because of it?

Let’s not wait for “someday.”
Let’s live with intention—today.

Until next Saturday!

Love, Talisha ❤️

  2. This is so real Talisha and very true indeed
With my mom I myself had to learn..stop running after tomorrow and not enjoying the value in today.

    1. Yes Nicole! I believe in finding a healthy balance – learn from the past, plan for the future and live fully in the present.
