It’s Okay to Not Be Okay

Earlier this week during the Lenten retreat, Father shared a line that stayed with me:

“It is okay to not be okay, but it is not okay to pretend to be okay, if you are not okay.”

That sentence stopped me in my tracks.

So often we feel pressure to appear strong in every area of our lives – our faith, our families, our relationships, our finances, our careers. We want to believe we are holding everything together.

But sometimes the most honest thing we can say is simply:

“I’m not okay right now.”

And that honesty can be the beginning of healing.

When I reflect on the nine dimensions of life balance, I realize something important: balance doesn’t mean that every area feels good all the time.

Sometimes:

  • Our faith feels complicated because we are grieving, questioning, or searching for answers.
  • Our relationships carry loss, disappointment, or distance that we are still trying to understand.
  • Our hearts are healing from past hurt, and we need time before we open ourselves again.
  • Our personal growth reminds us that there is still so much we don’t know yet.
  • Our careers or businesses stretch us in ways that reveal where we still need to grow.
  • Our finances, health, or environment may not yet look the way we hoped they would.

And in those moments, self-care is not pretending that everything is perfect.

Self-care is telling the truth about where we are.

Sometimes that truth means reaching out.

To a coach.
To a mentor.
To a therapist or counselor.
To a priest.
To a trusted friend.

None of us were meant to carry life alone.

One of the greatest acts of courage is admitting that we need support.

An Invitation for This Week

So if today you find yourself in a season where some parts of life feel heavy, uncertain, or unresolved, remember this:

You don’t have to pretend.

It is okay to not be okay.

And sometimes the most important step toward healing is simply allowing yourself to say so.

Reflection

Where in your life might you need to stop pretending and start being honest about how you feel?

Take a moment today to give yourself permission to be human.

Until next Saturday!

Love, Talisha ❤️

  1. It’s okay to not be okay, but there must be “hope”! Always remember that there’s a way, because there’s a will, and mostly, because God is in it for good 👍🏽

    1. Hope and faith in God is the key… and so is our relationship with God. The message also included a call to be real in our conversations with Him.
He knows your heart. He know what you are going through and what we are feeling deep down … sometimes the road to healing starts with admitting to ourselves and to God that we are struggling and being open to His response and guidance.

  2. I agree that it’s ok to not be ok at times and our healing truly begins with admitting and acknowledging that..’hey, today I am not okay..’
Thank God, though sorrow may endure for the night, joy truly comes in the morning and that simply means that I may not be ok presently but hope says I’ll soon be okay because my present state won’t be my last state, it will soon be my past state 😊
