This week, I was reminded of something we often speak about, yet rarely practice fully – being present in the now.
Life has a way of pulling us in many directions at once.
We think about what we must do next.
We replay what already happened.
We plan, we fix, we rush, we recover.
And in doing so, we sometimes miss the very moment we are standing in.
A Moment I Almost Could Have Missed
On Ash Wednesday, I returned to Mass after being away for a few weeks because of travel, illness, and simply not feeling well. My routine had been disrupted, and without realizing it, my spirit felt a little disrupted too.
During the consecration prayer, as I knelt with my eyes closed, I felt a gentle breeze move through the church. It brushed across my face so softly, yet so distinctly, that it immediately captured my attention.
In that instant, I felt God’s presence.
It felt like a kiss.
Like love.
Like a quiet “welcome back.”
There were no dramatic signs. No words spoken. Just a simple moment.
And because I was still enough to receive it, I did not miss it.
I felt seen and I felt forgiven.
Why Presence Matters
So often, we think our relationship with God, and even our self-care, must come through effort, activity, or striving.
But presence cannot be forced.
Matthew 6:24 reminds us that we cannot serve multiple masters. While this passage is often interpreted in practical terms, it also speaks to attention. We cannot be fully available to God, to life, or to ourselves if our minds are divided between yesterday’s regrets and tomorrow’s worries.
Presence requires choosing where we place our awareness.
When we are scattered, we miss grace.
When we are attentive, we notice it everywhere.
Self-Care Is Learning to Stay
True self-care is not always about adding something new to our lives.
Sometimes it is about returning:
-
Returning to stillness
-
Returning to prayer
-
Returning to our breath
-
Returning to the moment we are already in
That evening at Mass, nothing outwardly changed. But inwardly, everything softened – because I allowed myself to be there. Not catching up or compensating for the weeks I missed… Just present.
An Invitation for This Week
Pay attention to the small movements of grace around you:
-
A pause in your day
-
A kind word
-
A quiet feeling of peace
-
A moment of beauty you would normally rush past – like your reflection in a puddle
These are not interruptions. They are invitations.
God often meets us not in the noise of life, but in the spaces where we finally slow down enough to notice.
Affirmations
I release the need to rush.
I welcome this moment as it is.
I am present to God, to my life, and to myself – here and now.
Until next Saturday!
Love, Talisha ❤️
